South Pacific is nominated to the International Jumper Futurity.

South Pacific’s untimely death at The Oaks Indian Hill Ranch in Valley Center, California, was caused by a very rare parasitic infection by the nematode halicephalobus deletrix, formerly known as micronema deletrix.  Infection with the organism is through the mouth, nasal passage, or an open wound.  Only 15 cases had been reported and confirmed through necropsy on horses in the United States in over 23 years, with approximately five to eight additional cases ever having been reported in the entire world.

South Pacific’s necropsy report showed extensive parasitic infestation of the kidneys, optic nerves and brain.  Further examination revealed no evidence the organism entered his system through his nasal passage, mouth or an abrasion.  None of South Pacific’s stable mates, nor the other 300 horses in pastures on the Valley Center Ranch at that time, have shown any signs of infection with halicephalobus deletrix; nor have any of the many soil samples taken from the property contained the organism.

The Oaks is offering a $10,000 reward for the information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the death of South Pacific.  If you have any information, please call 800-250-3715.
